DECORATING ON A BUDGET
Fill the House Without Emptying Your Wallet
With the holidays around the corner, budgeting becomes an important part of the plan. Decorating your interior on a budget is not about being cheap. It is about being smart.
Between gifts for friends and family and hosting dinner parties, this time of year puts a dent in everyone's wallet. A decorating budget is the most useful tool you have when you want to refresh your interior for the season. Ready to fill your house without emptying your wallet? This is how we recommend doing it.
Four Steps
-
Make a wish list
Go through your home and decide what you need and what you want. Are you looking for additions or changes? To help the brainstorming, collect photos from social media, the internet and magazines. Do you have specific statement pieces in mind? Let your imagination run wild. Our Instagram page is a good place to start for inspiration.
-
Set your budget
Work out your regular expenses and how much you can spend on this project. Your budget should be the amount you are happy to spend without feeling guilty. Once it is set, you and your designer can decide what exactly to spend it on. As a general guide, the budget should cover furniture, flooring, paint, accessories and decor.
-
Create a decorating plan
From fixtures to wall accessories, a decorating plan builds the overall look. With your decor list and budget in front of you, put the necessities ahead of the secondary items. Decide whether you want to focus on a few rooms or the whole house. This is the point where professional advice pays for itself; see our interior design page.
-
Final considerations
Avoid impulse buys and stick to your plan and your budget. Do your research and compare price tags by comparison shopping; it can save you a lot in extra costs. The more familiar you are with what is on the market, the more informed your decisions will be. Our guidance can help you through the process and get good value for your money.
